After Your Permanent Makeup Session

After Your Permanent Makeup Session

Upon completion of your permanent makeup session, we will apply a topical ointment with a cotton swab to keep the area moist and to create a protective barrier.  We will give you ointment to continue using over the next 7-10 days.  You should apply a thin coating of the ointment approximately every 3-4 hours.  It is important not to neglect or to over saturate the ointment, as this can cause poor pigment retention.

  • Please do not Panic about the intensity of your permanent makeup immediately after your treatment.  The color looks most intense during the first 3-4 days, and fades a little each day for 7-14 days.
  • If you experience minor swelling or bruising after your procedure, you can apply cold compresses.  The best way to do this is to soak a clean washcloth or pad in ice water, ring it out, and apply gently.  Your bruising and/or swelling should not interfere with your daily activities and should only last for a couple of days.  If you find that your swelling or redness is getting worse after 3 days of healing, please contact your artist or your physician.
  • It is normal to experience dryness or flaking during the first week or two of healing.  Please do not pick or force any of the flaking off.  It may seem as though your makeup is coming off, but it is just the top layer of dead skin cells.  There is pigment underneath, but it is softer looking than the initial color.  Sometimes the color sheds faster in one area than another, but eventually, it will all become soft and natural looking.
  • Lips tend to look more red or plum immediately after the permanent lip color procedure, due to their vascularity.  The color will fade during the first week and often looks as though it has disappeared during the second and third weeks.  During weeks 4 through 6, the lip color reappears in a soft, natural looking way.  After the first week of applying ointment every 3-4 hours, the ointment should be applied nightly to keep the lips moist.
  • Makeup such as Lipstick, Lip Gloss, Mascara, and Eyeshadow should not be worn over top of permanent makeup during the first week of healing.
  • Do not use tanning beds or go in direct sunlight during the first week of healing.
  • Do not use washcloths, scrubs, Retinols, or exfoliants directly over the permanent makeup during the first week of healing.  It is ok if your permanent makeup gets wet while you are showering, but do not put your face directly in the shower head, and make sure you pat your face dry very gently.
  • It is best not to sweat for the first 48 hours.  If you do work out and become sweaty, please rinse your face gently with lukewarm water and pat dry gently.  Apply a thin coating of ointment.
  • After you have healed for at least 6 weeks, you may need a follow up session to fill in any spots that have faded too much, or to adjust shape or color.  It is important that we wait the full 6 weeks before applying more permanent makeup, as the lower layers of your skin take this amount of time to fully heal and touching up prematurely can cause poor pigment retention or skin damage.  There is a supply fee for follow up session.

Maintaining Your Permanent Makeup

  • You will want to have your permanent makeup touched up to keep the color looking fresh.  Everyone is different, but we encourage our clients to have a touch up every 1-2 years.  Our touch up fees are less expensive than our first-time permanent makeup procedure fees.
  • Wearing sunscreen and limiting sun exposure may help prolong the vibrancy of your permanent makeup
  • Medical Conditions, Lifestyle, and general health all have an impact on how your body retains permanent makeup.
  • It is important not to have permanent makeup too often.  We prefer that you wait at least ten months between permanent makeup appointments and try to touch up every 2 years.  Having too many permanent makeup sessions, too often, can lead to an over-saturated look and can damage the skin, making it harder to apply permanent makeup in the future.
  • Applying a heavy moisturizer or ointment nightly to permanent makeup can help keep it looking vibrant.
