Scar Camouflage

Specialized, advanced medical tattooing techniques are used to help hide or improve the appearance of scars and/or imperfections caused by surgery, skin conditions, trauma, and/or birth.  Color can be added to hide scars from surgeries such as face lifts, hair transplants, mastectomy, cleft lip, and more. Some scars are covered up with fleshtone pigment, similar to a concealer or foundation, but better, because it wont smear or wear off.  Other scars are hidden with permanent makeup that simulates the look of lips, brows, or eyelashes, hair, or areolas, where they may have been lost.  Permanent makeup is also very helpful for those with alopecia, because it creates the illusion of natural looking Eyebrows and Eyelashes without the fuss of applying makeup or the fear of it wearing off or smudging.

Scar Campuflage

Scars resulting from surgeries, burns, traumatic accidents or other injuries, as well as other skin imperfections like birthmarks and abnormal pigmentation, can be hidden or at least made less obvious through the skilled application of cosmetic tattooing. With this procedure, both men and women can benefit in terms of the boost in confidence they will get from having the scarred or affected skin areas on their bodies permanently made up to look like normal and healthy skin.

At Cosmetic Solutions, our artists are also trained in this specialized field in permanent cosmetics called ‘Camouflage Tattooing” or “Skin Color Tattooing”. The purpose of this specialized field is to use tattooing to disguise or hide from plain sight a scar or a portion of the skin that is missing pigment or color or which otherwise looks different from its surrounding areas. Aside from having an artistic eye for color and skin tone, a good practitioner in this field must also have a thorough understanding of the science behind pigments and the physiology of human skin and tissues. We are proud of the fact that our permanent makeup artists are very competent in this field of specialization.

First, we will have to ascertain from you whether you have clearance from your medical doctor or physician to undergo this cosmetic procedure. If you have such clearance, we will proceed to the next step, which is to give you a “spot color test.” Here we will analyze your skin tone, mixing varying combinations of pigments to arrive at a possible good match with your own natural skin coloration. This process will take a few minutes to complete since this involves trial and error. Once a good match is found, your permanent makeup artist will tattoo either a small spot in your scarred or discolored skin, or the entire scar, using the mixed pigments. When through with your cosmetic tattoo, you will be asked to wait from one to two months to see how the test color will look after healing. If you and your permanent makeup artist are satisfied with the result, you may not need another cosmetic tattoo session for about a year. It is possible that you will see some improvement, but still desire another session six weeks after the first session is healed. As long as your skin is in good condition, and your permanent makeup artist feels that it is safe, you can have multiple scar camouflage sessions spaced 6-8 weeks apart, until optimal results are achieved. It is important to trust your artist, if they feel your skin has reached its maximum level of improvement, as overdoing cosmetic tattooing can ruin the look.

At Cosmetic Solutions, camouflage tattooing is done safely and almost painlessly. We use medical-grade tattooing cartridges with a digital machine, and we apply topical cream to numb the skin before the procedure. If at any time, the customer feels uncomfortable, we increase the application of the analgesic gel on the affected area. You can expect the areas that have been cosmetically tattooed to appear more intense in color and there may be swelling or redness for the first couple of days. Improvement will likely be seen immediately, but the final color should not be judged until the skin has healed for 6 weeks.
